PROOF THE ACADEMY AWARDS GETS IT WRONG

PROOF THE ACADEMY GETS IT WRONG
This year is a huge anniversary for several movies. Lots of Hollywood classic movies are now 0 years old or older. 1987 was a huge year in Hollywood. It was the first time in 3 years that ticket sales were up. It was a great year for good movies. Here is a list of some movies that were released in 1987 and these movies are still huge sales in home video.

1) Fatal Attraction*
2) Good Morning Vietnam*
3) Moonstruck
4) The Untouchables*
5) Predator*
6) Lethal Weapon*
7) Dirty Dancing
8) LA Bamba
9) RoboCop*
10) Planes Trains and Automobiles
11) Wall Street*
12) Outrageous Fortune*

What is so sad is that most These were "R" rated movies. Hollywood has forgotten about the adult market. Now all of these movies sell very well on home video. For movies that are 20 years old if any of them were to be released today in a Special Edition DVD they would sell very well. In fact most of these movies have had very bare bones DVD release. However each one of these movies make millions each year on home video. They are still popular movies. Each one finds a new generation of fans. However what strikes me as funny is that the movie that won Best Picture of the Year was "The Last Emperor". It is very likely that nobody under 30 has even heard of that movie and if they have they most likely would never watch it. in fact the movie never caught on anywhere. The movie was never a huge movie rental even upon its home video debut in 1988.

This brings me to the Academy Awards for 1982 movies.
The movies nominated were
1) ET
2) THE VERDICT
3) TOOTSIE
4) MISSING
5) GANDHI

Now what is funny is that 2 of those movies are not on anybodys must see list at all. Best Picture Winner "Gandhi" is almost a joke now. Now tell the truth- I will. "Gandhi" was a good movie however its one of those movies that one viewing was enough for a lifetime. In fact maybe 2 lifetimes. I would rather watch "The Verdict" again then "Gandhi". What is amazing to me is the fact one of the biggest hits of 1982 did not even get nominated for Best Picture. That movie is now the classic motion Picture "An Officer and a Gentleman". Which sells more DVD's every year then best picture winner "Gandhi". Which brings me to the following list. These movies were released the same year as "Gandhi". Time has been kinder to these movies. Remember that they are now 25 years old and out sell "Gandhi" on DVD. Here is a list of movies would out sell a special edition of "Gandhi" if the studios were to release a special edition of them (if there hasn't been one already)

1) ET
2) TOOTSIE
3) AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN*
4) VICTOR/VICTORIA
5) MAKING LOVE*
6) PORKY'S*
7) FIRST BLOOD*
8) BLADE RUNNER*
9) PINK FLOYD THE WALL*
10) ANNIE
11) STAR TREK II

So what is my point of these 2 list? Well the point is that these movies on the list is what I call the Real Best Picture Winners. All of the above movies find new fans each year. The become classics. So if the movie you loved didn't win the Academy Award just remember chances are that your favorite movie will live on. In fact I am sure of it. 10 years from now I am sure that "Dreamgirls" will out sell "The Departed".
*R Rated movies. The movies made for adults seem to become evergreen movies.
