I loved Dave's the Laser Place. I had a huge Laserdisc collection and 80% of them were bought from Dave's. Now Dave's was great because they had lots of major Hollywood Directors come in and sign the laserdisc (and later DVD's). To name a few John Carpenter, William Friedkin, & the the late Robert Wise.
There also had studio day when reps. from all the major Hollywood Studios would come in and talk to the public on upcoming DVD' releases.
Dave's also sold high end Audio & Video Equipment. The store was great. However Dave's closed a few years ago and here is what I think what happened.
1) Laserdisc turned into DVD. Daves was only a handful of places that sold movies on Laserdisc.
2) DVD was sold everywhere at huge discounts. Dave's had to compete now with thousands of places for the DVD business. With Laserdisc that had very little competition.
3) The Internet and DVD meet. People could now buy any movie they wanted from anywhere. They no longer had to drive to Dave's.
NOW THE BIGGEST THING THAT HAPPEN POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE
The staff was okay but it had a few rude people. If you did not drive up in a $100,000 car they did not care to help you. There was one man in there was so rude (he was a nerdy type and wore glasses) that I stop buying DVD's there. I was spending At a minimum $400 a month on new DVD'S. Whenever I would ask him anything (release date for of a movie) he would just turn up his nose. He would answer my question but I think he was just a snot. Well I had enough of his shit.
There was others in there that were just as rude but he is the one the sticks out in my mind. There was a nice girl/lady that worked in there but Dave's for some reason seem to hire assholes.
