IN 1982 there were a slew of gay theme, or "gender bender movies". This was a ground breaking year. The gay rights movement of the 1970's had finally caught Hollywood's attention and Hollywood started making movies about gays and lesbians.
What is sad the movies of 1982 happen to come out the same time Ronald Regan was in office and AIDS became a household word. However the gay theme related movies "Victor/Victoria", "Making Love", "Personal Best", & "Partners" were not huge hits at all. Only the gender bender movie "Tootsie" was a huge hit. So Hollywood learned that if if you have a man in a dress he couldn't be gay.
Well here we are 26 years later. With the exception of "Partners" all the movies hold up today. In fact I would call them classics. "Victor/Victoria" was ahead of its time. If the movie was made today I am sure it would win Best Picture of the Year. The movie is everything you want in a movie. Its funny and its sad. The Musical numbers (which are all performed in a stage setting) are just great. Please rent this movie if you never have watched it. It is movie that is a joy to behold. This was writer/director Blake Edwards at his best.
The movie is one the best movies of the 1980's. In fact its in my top 5 of the 1980's.
