IN 1992 New Line Cinema Released the very controversial "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me".
When the movie premiered at Cannes Film Festival that Spring the movie & David Lynch were booed. The funny thing was just 2 years prior David Lynch's movie "Wild at Heart" won the Palme d' Or (Meaning Best Picture) and David Lynch was also booed then as well!
That was in May of 1992. When the movie premiered in August of 1992 in the United Sates the critics here in the states were not too kind. It was however the same critics that love the 2hr pilot of the TV Show "Twin Peaks" so to me this was weird because when I saw "Fire Walk Me" I loved it. I was a fan of the TV show. I did however get bored with the show after we saw who killed Laura Palmer! I still watched the show (in fact I recorded the whole show on VHS) and kept those previous videos until Katrina took them away. However what I am getting at here is that by the time the show aired its last 4 original episodes the show did improve however the ratings didn't. In fact ABC cancelled the show months before they aired the last 2 episodes as a 2hr movie block.
Now the TV ended with a cliffhanger. Before the movie "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" started shooting the fans of the show were promised that the movie would solve the cliffhanger.
We were also told that "TPFWWM" would be a prequel as well. We were going to see the last 7 days of Laura Palmer.
Well when the movie was released the movies the cliffhanger wasn't solved completely! In fact it was missing. David Lynch edited out most of the cast from the TV show. In fact the character of Annie (Love Interest of Agent Cooper played by Heather Graham) was edited to only a 10 second cameo. The same was done to David Bowie character.
Now at the time of the movie premiered rumors floated that Image would release a Special Edition Laserdisc that would have the now famous deleted scenes which included the resolution of the TV Series cliffhanger. That never happened! New Line was to release a DVD that included these deleted scenes but were unable reach a financial terms with Cigby 2000 which in fact owned the Deleted footage.
New Line Cinema only released the movie they do not own the movie or any deleted footage. For years now there have been fan petition's for a Special Edition DVD that would have these deleted scenes but so far nothing. It has now been 16 years since the movie was made!
The following paragraph is only my speculation
Now something funny is going on. New Line Cinema DVD of "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With ME" is now out of print! Are they planning on releasing a special editions with Deleted scenes! Do they still own the DVD rights? Since the whole TV Box set was released last year to great fan acclaim is the timing now right to release the deleted footage.
David Lynch has said he has picked 17 scenes that he would like to see released in some form. He has said that he "...is not interest in reediting the movie, the movie that was released is the directors cut".
AND HERE IS MY BIG IDEA
Now if some cable channel is smart they would have a David Lynch Special and all about "Twin Peaks". It would be a 2-3 hour Special. The surviving cast of Twin Peaks could be interviewed and then the deleted scenes would have a world premiere! How about that!!! That same cable channel could then sell the special on DVD. Everyone would win.
What do you think??
