In 1990 movies ran under 2hrs. In fact the average movie was 107 minutes. Theatre owners and studios hated it when a movie ran over 2hrs. They would lose one showing a night. Then 2 things happen at the same time. However I blame Keven Costner
In 1990 Keven Costner broke all the rules with "Dances with Wolves". It was 3hrs! 1/2 the movie was in subtitles! Plus it was a Western! Well the movie was a box office smash and won the Academy Award for best picture and director.
Then in the 1990's the multiplex boom took over. There were plenty of screens now and movie studios starting let movies running time get out of control. Today the average movie is 2hrs and 10 minutes. I have set through enough movies in last 10 years to let you know that when most movies are released and they are over 2hrs there is about 10-15 minutes they could of cut out and not harm the movie. I hate watching a movie then looking my watch every five minutes wondering "when will this end".
Here is examples
1991 "Robin Hood", "Hook", "Backdraft", "Prince of Tides"
1992 "Batman Returns", "The Bodyguard", " A League of their Own","Patriot Games"
1993 "The Pelican Brief","The Firm", "Mrs Doubtfire", "Philadelphia" "Sommersby"
1994 "Forrest Gump", "Clear and Present Danger", "Interview with the Vampire"
1995 "Heat", "Mr Hollands Opus", "Casino"
1996 "Independence Day", "Mission Impossible", "Jerry Maguire", "Ransom" "The Rock" "A Time to Kill", "The Mirror has Two Faces"
1997 "The Lost World","As Good as it Gets","Good Will Hunting", "The Devil's Advocate", "Contact", "Con Air"
1998 "Armageddon", "Deep Impact","Godzilla", "The Truman Show", "Shakespeare in Love"
"A Civil Action"
1999 "Runaway Bride", "Magnolia", "Eyes Wide Shut", "The Talented Mr Ripley" "Meet Joe Black"
2000 "Castaway", "The Perfect Storm", "Traffic", "Erin Brockovich"
2001 "Harry Potter", "Hannibal", "A.I", "Ali" "Pearl Harbor"
2002 "Star Wars II", "Harry Potter II", Catch me if you Can", "Gangs of New York"
2003 "Bad Boys II", "Seabiscuit", "The Last Sumurai", "Holes", "Runaway Jury", "Open Range"
2004 "The Day After Tomorrow", "The Polar Express", "The Aviator"
2005 "Harry Potter GOF" "Wedding Crashers", "King Kong", "Batman Begins", "Narnia" "The Interpreter", "Cinderella Man"
2006 "X III", "Superman Returns", "The Da Vinci Code", "Casino Royale", "The Good Shepard"
Now this is just a few movies. You may disagree on some of these. However all these movies were 10 minutes too long. However when a movie runs long people always comment on it. Example
Billy "Did you see The Departed"
Jenny "Ya I did god though its long"
Its the first thing they comment on! Most movies should run under 2 hours! When the movie comes out on DVD the director could have his edition be released along side the theatrical edition.
I think all of these movies would of made more money if the studio edited them down! I don't think I am alone think of this!
When movies are remakes like "KONG" we already know how its going to end.
We know "Superman" will save the world & James Bond will live. It shouldn't take 2 1/2 hrs
for the film maker to tell us that!
