BOX OFFICE SPEAKS NO MORE SEQUELS TO SEQUELS

In the last month we have had 3 major motion pictures released that were #3 movies. They were of course "Spiderman III", "Shrek III" and "Pirates of the Caribbean III At Worlds End". All opened well at the box office! In fact in their opening weekend each movie did over $100,000,000. This is great however "Pirates" and Spiderman" on the following weekend droped more than 60% from their openinging weekend. In fact even "Shrek" droped 45%. What does all these numbers tell us?

The audience that wanted too see these movies saw them opening weekend. None of these movies are attracting a new audience in their latest adventure. In fact the first sequels to both "Pirates" and "Shrek" made over $150,000,000 more than the originals. "Spiderman II" however was only off 6% from the originals.

Still due this Summer is "Oceans 13" that's a number 3 "The Bourne Ultimatum" is also a number 3. Don't forget that we still have "Rush Hour 3" and a remake of "Halloween".

We also have "Hostel 2", " Evan Almighty" (sequel to Bruce Almighty), "Die Hard 4", "Harry Potter #5", "Invasion" (A REMAKE OF INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS).

Now here is the low down. Each of these movies do have fans. However was there demand for "Rush Hour 3", "Die Hard 4", or even the remakes that are due before the end of Summer.

This was to be the biggest Summer ever at the box office. However it looks like its not going to be that way at all. The biggest movies of the Summer have already been released and there not bringing in the foot traffic that the previous films brought in. Again "Shrek" "Spiderman" and "Pirates" are not going to break any more records.

One last thing. With all these movies opening up on 4000 screens movies no longer sell out. At my local theatre "Pirates" was playing on 6 screens. So if the 7 was sold out there was room for me at 7:15. Nobody has go home anymore because of a sell out. That is a thing of the past! In fact the last time I remember a sell out was way back in 1991. It took me 3 trips to the theatre to get a ticket for "Terminator 2". Speaking of which there is another TERMINATOR movie due in about 2 years.
