WANTED CHER COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME JIMMY DEAN ON DVD

WANTED A LEGAL VERSION OF THE 1982 MOVIE ADAPTION OF "COME BACK TO THE FIVE & DIME JIMMY DEAN JIMMY DEAN".

This movie made Cher "An Actress" in the eyes of Hollywood. It was because of "..Jimmy Dean" that Cher was cast in "SILKWOOD" and was later nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for "Silkwood".

Now the movie was directed by Robert Altman. The movie was made as soon as the Broadway Production closed. In fact the play received bad reviews from the press. However there were investors in the play however got lucky. The pay tv channel SHOWTIME was an investor and part of the reason why SHOWTIME invested was because Robert Altman agreed to film a performance of the play for SHOWTIME.

However here is the entry from wikipedia.com However it is not 100% accurate

Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is a 1981 play and, later, film written by Ed Graczyk; the stage and screen versions were both directed by Robert Altman, and starred Sandy Dennis, Cher, Mark Patton (his first film role), Karen Black, Sudie Bond and Kathy Bates.

in which Giant was filmed. They experience a day full of revealed secrets and revelatory experiences. The play was a financial failure and was panned by critics, notably Frank Rich in the New York Times, who mercilessly derided the text, direction, acting, and even the set.

Despite the play's failure, the star power of the cast ensured a movie sale, and the 1982 film was an important turning point in the movie career aspirations of Cher. After trying for several years to be taken seriously, Cher was regarded as something of a Hollywood joke, until she performed in the stage version of this play, along with Black and Dennis.

The strong reviews she received for her stage work (even Rich called her "ingratiating") paved the way for her to be cast in the film version, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. This success led to her being cast in Silkwood in 1983, for which she received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In the film, Altman frequently uses mirrors as a device for connecting scenes seamlessly between the present and the past. Reflections in mirrors are part of many of the frame compositions in the movie. Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean was Altman's first feature film since the critically-panned Popeye.

Well the play wasn't filmed exactly. In fact it was a re-staging and slightly re-written for a film adaption.

SHOWTIME was thrilled when they saw the film. They decided to release the movie theatrically. It did get only a very limited release however the movie played for 6 months in Century City, CA. In fact when the movie was released to video it was still playing at the Century City movie house. This was a first!

Well here it is 25 years later. The VHS has long been out of print. The DVD you see on e-bay is not an official release. A SPECIAL EDITION DVD is warranted for this movie.

Since its release the movie (and play) have been gathering critical raves. The people who dismissed it before now are raving about it.

Even though the movie and play were not hits the relationship between Robert Altman and Cher endured. When Robert Altman made his 1992 comeback movie "The Player" Cher made a scene stealing cameo (if you see the movie Robert Altman told Cher to wear Red).
