"Meatballs" is a comedy that was Bill Murray's first staring role. Already famous for being on "Saturday Night Live" "Meatballs" made Bill a Huge movie star and for good reason Bill Murray is about the best there is.
Now I was 12 when the film was released in the Summer of 1979. I loved it then and I was surprised a few years later when I saw Leonard Maltin's negative review of the film.
Now years later I found out the film was originally conceived as a "R RATED" film. However with lots improvising (because an uncompleted screenplay) that when the director started to put the film together in the editing room he saw the film was an endearing story of a camp counselor and shy pre-teen and in a small way they both help each other grow up.
About 6 months after the film warped production Bill Murray and Chris Makepeace returned to film a few additional scenes to help flesh out there story.
I just saw the film again and it holds up. I do not know why Leonard Maltin gave this film such a negative review. Then again I have met the man and he does have his head up his ass!
